Metal Monday – Dark Divinity

Dark Divinity is a 5-piece melodic death metal band based in Wellington, New Zealand. The band released their debut single ‘Seasons of Dark’ in November 2017, quickly drawing praise around the web. Following in the footsteps of genre originators At the Gates, The Haunted & Soilwork the band also take cues from death/black metal acts such as Immortal, Morbid Angel & Death, emerging with their own distinct style of ferocious, hook-laden death metal.

 Vocals – Alan Gregson

Guitar – Paul Stewart
Guitar – Reece Davies

Bringing together an assortment of New Zealand metal musicians Dark Divinity’s debut single was very well received but it wasn’t until January 2018 that the band had their first real claim to fame. The release of their first merch caused an international stir with what would later come to be known as ‘Junk Monk’. Once noticed the internet couldn’t seem to look away resulting in coverage from, and (a couple of days late to the part) even NZ’s own TheRock. The band had this to say at the time:

“So it has been brought to our attention that our t-shirt artwork may or may not resemble male genitalia. This was a genuine cock-up, no member had noticed the resemblance previously and we can assure you that we weren’t trying to pull the wool over anyone’s eyes or jerk people around. If anyone who ordered a shirt feels shafted, we are offering full refunds, so rest assured you will be endowed with your hard earned money once again.”

Whether incredibly savvy marketing or general phallic fascination we may never know but at least we do know they’re doing us proud when it comes to the music so check out their latest track – Exegesis.
