Interview with Skinny Hobos

Interview with Alex Ferrier (aka Alex Elvis) and Sam Holdom (aka Texas Holdom) – Spring 2016

WHAT DOES SKINNY HOBOS MEAN AND WHERE DID IT COME FROM?

ALEX ELVIS
It was the name of the band before the band was a band, and when the band started the name made so much sense in relation to the music that it just seemed to fit

HOW LONG HAVE YOU ALL KNOWN EACH OTHER? HOW DID YOU MEET?

TEXAS HOLDOM
We’ve known each other since high school when we were rivals at the smokefree rockquest, but lost track for a few years – Alex went to Canada, I to Dunedin – and met again when we started working at a music store in 2013. We jammed after work one day and right away it was apparent that we had chemistry and realised that we had to be in a band together.

FAVORITE SONG YOU’VE RECORDED AND WHAT DOES THAT SONG MEAN TO YOU?

ALEX ELVIS
Probably when we covered Quinn the Human’s ‘Desert/Disco’ as part of a split EP that was recorded for The Merchant of Tirau single release tour with them. They’re great mates of ours and they play really chaotic music. We got to be a little more experimental working out how to replicate their five members with only two of us. It was a really fun process.

TEXAS HOLDOM
Mine is a song I recorded in Dunedin with my old band Hunting Bears called ‘On Our Own’ off the album Machines of Recovery. It was probably my favourite song from that band, and it contains the coolest sounding fill I’ve recorded.

WHO HAS BEEN THE BEST BAND TO PLAY WITH AND WHY?

ALEX ELVIS
We don’t know how to answer this question without offending a lot of amazing bands. We’ve had the privilege of playing so many shows in the last two years and there’s a lot of amazing Talent in New Zealand. I really would like to get into a list of all my favorite bands we’ve played with but I don’t think there’s enough paper to write them all down. So instead, I’ll talk about an experience. We played with an American band called Radio Moscow at King’s Arms earlier this year. I’d listened to their recordings and they were good, but seeing them and their musicianship live was ridiculous. It was like being transported back into the 1970s.

TEXAS HOLDOM
I can’t pick a favourite band, but I can pick a favourite lineup – us, Funkacybin, Rufflefeather and No Broadcast at Darkroom in Christchurch. Amazing night full of incredible bands.

ALEX ELVIS
Also, Quinn the Human.

TEXAS HOLDOM
Oh yeah. And Quinn the Human

WHERE IN THE WORLD WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO PLAY?

ALEX ELVIS
The moon.

TEXAS HOLDOM
The moon isn’t in the world.

ALEX ELVIS
Exactly. We’re going to play everywhere anyway at some point.

TEXAS HOLDOM
Glastonbury would be particularly special – my parents have attended, and I’d say they and my sister will make the trek again when it happens. That’d be really cool.

ALEX ELVIS
Wherever it is, what I want is for a full scale riot to break out when people are trying to get into the show and can’t. I’ll be in the midst of it, because I forgot our stage time and got stuck outside.

WHAT ARE THE BANDS (AND PERSONAL) MUSICAL INFLUENCE?

ALEX ELVIS
One of the biggest influences for me has been simply being in a two piece and using a whole bunch of alien gear to somehow make it sound like we’re a full band. Those limitations have forced us to become who we are musically. The way we attack those challenges constantly changes as we’re forced to become more creative inside these limitations.

TEXAS HOLDOM
John Bonham.

ALEX ELVIS
Yeah, John Bonham

WHY DO YOU THINK YOU HAVE A BIG FOLLOWING?

ALEX ELVIS
We don’t.

TEXAS HOLDOM
Please buy our shit.

WHAT IS THE CRAZIEST THING THAT HAS HAPPENED ON TOUR?

ALEX ELVIS
Lovelands, but we can’t really tell you much about it. You have to experience it. It’s kinda the rules of Lovelands.

TEXAS HOLDOM
We weren’t on tour, but Jono and Ben signed my butt cheeks at Rock the Park and referred to it on primetime TV.

 FAVORITE SONG OF ALL TIME?

ALEX ELVIS
That’s impossible. There’s no way you can pick a favorite song of all time. What’s with the open questions? Do you want us to talk forever?

TEXAS HOLDOM
I think the most influential song for me is blink-182’s The Rock Show. It was the song I recognised on the back of a CD which I now have tattooed on me. But favourite…I dunno. Right now my favourite is…Glassjaw’s ‘All Good Junkies Go To Heaven’.

ALEX ELVIS
I can maybe narrow it down to two off the top of my head. Led Zeppelin’s ‘No Quarter’, cause… It’s amazing. You might not know the other one, a song called ‘I Got The Blues’ by Labi Siffre. Seriously, check it out. You’ll thank me.

BAND MOST WANT TO PLAY WITH?

TEXAS HOLDOM
I have an idea for a lineup featuring only two piece bands that I think would kick ass: Cairo Knife Fight, Royal Blood, Death From Above 1979, The White Stripes, and us.

ALEX ELVIS
Not Royal Blood.

TEXAS HOLDOM
It’s my lineup, shut up.

ALEX ELVIS
Oh man, I’d love to play with death from above. I feel like my choice is narrowed down by our genre constrictions. I’d absolutely love to play with Stevie Wonder but I don’t think that’s gonna happen anytime soon. In this day and age, with who’s currently touring, I think Queens of the Stone Age would be awesome to play with.

 MUSIC EDUCATION?

ALEX ELVIS
I picked it up on the streets yo. Not the band. But also the band The Band. I really like the band The Band.

TEXAS HOLDOM
…. What? I studied contemporary performance at the University of Otago, which is a fancy way of saying I got pissed and played music as diverse as the city I called home for three and a half years.

ALEX ELVIS
But seriously kids, stay in school.

HAVE YOU BEEN INVOLVED WITH ANY BANDS PRE-SKINNY HOBOS?

TEXAS HOLDOM
Lots. Lots and lots.

ALEX ELVIS
Heaps as.

TEXAS HOLDOM
I think…15?

ALEX ELVIS
I’ve been in about 11. The last one was called Bridge, it was pretty cool.

TEXAS HOLDOM
Wait, 16.

ALEX ELVIS
We don’t get along with people very well. Why do you think there are no other members in Skinny Hobos?

FAVORITE KIWI BAND?

ALEX ELVIS
God dammit dude. I just escaped this question by answering with an American band earlier. Fuck you for making me do this. I have to think very carefully.

TEXAS HOLDOM
This is a tough one, but I think it goes to Left or Right from Dunedin. I still think they play hands down the best live show in the country. In saying that, I’ve loved every single show we’ve played with Quinn the Human, and we’ve played a lot together.

ALEX ELVIS
Ditto Quinn the Human. Also Jakob would have to be very high up on my list. And Cairo Knife Fight blows me away every single time I see them.

WHAT DID YOU DREAM ABOUT BECOMING WHEN YOU WERE YOUNGER?

TEXAS HOLDOM
A famous drummer.

ALEX ELVIS
Santa clause.

WHAT’S THE FUTURE PLANS FOR SKINNY HOBOS?

ALEX ELVIS
To protect the world from devastation.

TEXAS HOLDOM
To unite all peoples within our nation.

ALEX ELVIS
To denounce the evils of truth and love.

TEXAS HOLDOM
And extend our reach to the stars above.

ALEX ELVIS
Elvis

TEXAS HOLDOM
Texas

ALEX ELVIS
Skinny Hobos blast off at the speed of light.

TEXAS HOLDOM
Surrender now or prepare to fight.

MEOWTH
Meowth, that’s right!

LASTLY, WHAT ANIMAL WOULD YOU BE AND WHY?

TEXAS HOLDOM
I would be an albatross, cause those motherfuckers are majestic. Also they have a wingspan of nearly three metres.

ALEX ELVIS
I wanna be Paris Hilton’s little fucken dog. But in all seriousness, I think I embody the spirit of the pterodactyl. Majestic and scaly. With a holler that could deafen a triceratops at sixty paces.
